Musculoskeletal Injury Assessment
and Management
Your pain may be a result of an acute injury, eg an ankle sprain, or may be from a chronic condition, eg arthritis.
Our staff will thoroughly assess you and design a treatment plan to restore optimal health and function.
Imagine your muscle fibres are like a thread on a piece of clothing. When it is pulled, it bunches up and forms a knot. Muscle fibres form trigger points.
Active trigger points cause referred pain and will be noticeable when you are trying to use your muscles. Generally its a deep ache.
Latent trigger points cause stiffness and tightness and often alter the mechanics of the muscles and therefore the joints. Often these are not painful but do cause a lot of restriction
Deep tissue massage, compression and release upon these 'knots' causes an increase in blood flow to the local area and decrease symptoms very quickly.
Fascia runs throughout the body. It acts as a support 'web' within the body. It covers the muscles, segments the body into compartments and gives the body structural support. If this fascia becomes damaged or torn, overstretched or compressed the body loses its supportive strength. It is our job as a therapist to ensure the fascia is functioning correctly and not causing unneccesary pull on the body. Fascial release techniques in conjunction with joint and soft tissue mobilisation keep the mechanics of the body working at their best.
Dry Needling is the insertion of fine acupuncture needles to release trigger points. The application is not painful and is particularly helpful when you are too sore to be treated 'hands on'. It also works very well for nerve pain, eg sciatica, stubborn injuries, eg tennis elbow and to ease general muscle tightness/tension
Cupping is another method used to release superficial trigger points, fascia and areas of poor blood supply due to injury/lack of use.
Tens, or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, has been around for many years and is a very effective treatment for atrophy (muscle wasting) post injury. It is also a fantastic tool for pain relief as an alternative to drug therapy.
Aps Therapy, or Action Potential Stimulation, uses the body's on cellular energy to 'clear' inflammation and stagnation in the body tissues. It is a fantastic treatment for acute injuries and swelling such as sprained ankles or wrist injuries
When you have an injury, the muscles and joints often start being used in an incorrect manner. It may be more comfortable at the time but the body forms a compensation pattern which needs to be corrected before a chain reaction occurs.
The body is very good at forming compensation patterns and can perceive altered mechanics to be 'normal', therefore after the injujry has healed it can time some effort to return these patterns to their original and proper state.
Our Therapists can prescribe exercises to assist your recovery and avoid further injury/damage.
Yes, we give you homework!
Most conditions and injuries require the application of heat or cold or both. We will advise you which is best for you. Generally, an acute injury or unexplained sharp pain requires ice. Deep ache or post exercise fatigue may require heat to increase localised blood flow
If you need any supports or braces we can purchase these for you at a much lower cost than in the shops. We will also tell you wich will suit your condition the best.
If you require stretching or home exercises, we will give these to you as well with clear pictures and 'how to' notes.
